When the diagnosis of “probable Alzheimer’s” was made for Hopson, his wife of 43 years, Mary Nell Dorris, went to an Alzheimer’s Association support group for help and discovered that many caregivers could not afford sitter services for some relief.  As she cared for Hopson, she assembled 25 friend volunteers, had them trained by the State Mental Health Dept., and on January 8, 2001, First Friends was born, modeled after Best Friends of Kentucky, a national model for the Alzheimer’s Association, and based on Virginia Bell and David Troxel’s best friends approach.
